Digital Investing

For the last two or three years I have been reading more and more about artificial intelligence, or AI. It has been touted as the best thing since sliced bread to the investing public. It has been advertised as being designed for the younger, tech savvy folks who don’t need an advisor, or those who cannot meet the account minimums of most advisors or advisory programs. In the past year millions of dollars have flowed into the artificial intelligence programs of several companies. Unfortunately, in recent weeks, artificial intelligence may have proven less than up to the task given the volatility in the markets. Money has been moving out of AI programs, just not at an alarming rate, yet.

Late last week I read that outflows seemed to be gaining traction in the AI investing community. This article appeared within forty-eight hours of a registered investment advisor and a large broker/dealer announcing hybrid solutions. These solutions combine artificial intelligence with real intelligence in the form of access to a live advisor. The RIA firm, one that I work with, rolled their program out on December 13, 2018.It works the same as any other digital investing program, but it includes the option of working with an experienced advisor and diversified strategic and tactical aspects. 

With AI only programs, the investor gets no help, no advice, other than the program. The investor is left alone to this/her own research of what is going on and what to do going forward, and why. With the digital or AI and live advisor programs, the investor has the 24/7 access and “personal control”, but also has an advisor to consult with regarding all the questions he or she needs answers to.
